Irish Soda Bread

This super quick recipe is neither Irish nor a bread, but something closer to your mama’s banana nut loaf. We love the idea of taking one base recipe and playing on it with our cupboard scraps and leftovers- make it your own! Picture here is our honey-wheat thyme version and one with grated cheddar and dill. Curious to know the origins on this bread? The answer may surprise you.

Irish Soda Bread

  • 2 cups All purpose flour
  • 1 cup Whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp Baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp Salt
  • 12/3 cup Buttermilk

Irish Soda Bread

  1. Preheat the oven to 425F. Place the flours, baking soda and salt in a medium sized bowl. Pour the buttermilk over the flours, mixing just until the flour is moistened.
  2. Knead the dough for about a minute, then shape into a ball and place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a touch of flour. Sprinkle the top with anything from caraway seeds to pepitas. Score the bread with two slashes (in a cross pattern) and bake for 30-35 minutes.
